Self-referral
Many patients ask whether they can book a scan with us directly, without first seeing their GP or a specialist. This page explains what the law allows and how we can help.
Scans that use X-rays (X-ray, CT and nuclear medicine)
Examinations that use ionising radiation are governed by the Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations 2017, known as IR(ME)R. These regulations exist to protect patients from unnecessary radiation. They require every such examination to be requested by a registered healthcare professional who is entitled to refer, and to be justified by a radiologist before it goes ahead.
This means we cannot accept self-referrals for X-rays, CT scans or nuclear medicine. You will need a referral from your GP, a hospital consultant or another healthcare professional who is registered to refer patients for imaging. See our Referrals page for details.
Ultrasound and musculoskeletal MRI
Ultrasound and MRI do not use ionising radiation, so IR(ME)R does not apply to them. For these two types of scan we can make an exception to our usual referral requirement.
If you would like an ultrasound scan or a musculoskeletal (MSK) MRI scan (for example of a joint, muscle, tendon or the spine) without a referral, we can arrange a telephone consultation with one of our consultant radiologists. They will:
- discuss your symptoms and medical history
- advise whether a scan is likely to help, and which scan is most appropriate
- if a scan is appropriate, refer you for it and arrange the booking
Sometimes the radiologist may advise that you would be better served by seeing your GP or a specialist first. In that case they will explain why.
Before an MRI scan
MRI uses a strong magnetic field. You will be asked to complete a safety questionnaire before your scan. Please tell us at the time of your consultation if you have a pacemaker or other implanted device, metal fragments in your body, or any previous surgery involving metal implants.
Your results
Your scan will be reported by a consultant radiologist. With your consent, we will also send a copy of the report to your GP so that your medical records stay complete and any follow-up care can be arranged.
Treatment at the same visit
If your ultrasound scan shows a condition that can be treated with an ultrasound-guided procedure, such as calcific tendinitis of the shoulder, the radiologist may be able to discuss this with you and carry out the treatment at the same appointment, so that you do not need to come back. The radiologist will explain the procedure, its risks and alternatives, and ask for your consent before going ahead.
Fees
The telephone consultation with a consultant radiologist costs £75. This is separate from the cost of any scan, which is charged by the hospital where the scan takes place.
Self-referral is usually available on a self-funding basis. Most private medical insurers require a referral from a GP or specialist before they will authorise a scan, so if you are insured please check with your insurer before booking.
How to arrange a telephone consultation
Please email info@guildfordradiology.com or telephone 07591 798735, giving your name, a contact number and a brief description of the problem. We will arrange a time for one of our radiologists to call you, and they will complete the request form on your behalf.
This service is not suitable for urgent or emergency problems. If you are unwell or your symptoms are severe or getting worse, contact your GP, call NHS 111 or, in an emergency, call 999.
