The Duchess of Edinburgh has reopened the refurbished HASTE Wing at the Royal Surrey County Hospital, eighteen years after she first opened it.
The upgrade includes two new MRI scanners that use artificial intelligence to shorten scan times by around 30 per cent. Very young children can now be scanned in as little as 30 seconds, often without the need for a general anaesthetic – a particular benefit for the paediatric imaging service, in which Guildford Radiology Group members including Dr Jordan Green and Dr Sarah Watson specialise. The wing’s capacity rises from around 5,000 to 10,000 patients a year, and the scan rooms have been redesigned with calming lighting and films to make the experience more relaxing.
